The 2004 federal election was but a small step for the Green Party in Newfoundland and Labrador but was significant in that we managed to run a full slate of candidates in the province and received more than 3200 votes. Most importantly, Newfoundlander's and Labradorian's support for their local candidates helped the national Green Party achieve its goal of gaining 2% of the electoral vote, required in order for the party to receive federal funding.
The next step for building the Green Party in Newfoundland and Labrador is to get Electoral District Associations (EDA) established in each of our seven ridings. An electoral district association is a legal political entity under the Elections Canada Act, meaning it can fundraise and issue charitable tax receipts. In order for an EDA to be registered it must have at least two members- a CEO or president, someone who has a prime interest in seeing the association succeed and grow, and an Official Agent who oversees all the finances of the EDA, keeping track of expenses, cash inflows etc. When an election is called the members of the EDA can nominate a candidate to run, and manage the affairs of that person's campaign. In between elections an EDA can work on developing local policy, hold elections for its own positions, and contribute to other environmental campaigns. In order to become a member of an EDA one need only sign up as a member of the Green Party of Canada.
