On June 6th, the NL Greens sponsored a round table discussion titled " Green Municipalities "with a particular focus on the environmental problems of St. John's.

Guest speaker Elio Diiorio , municipal councillor from Richmond Hill, Ontario was on hand to discuss his experience as a 'green' municipal councillor. (see www.eliodiiorio.com) Mr Diiorio spoke extensively about the need for the people of St. John's to be the change they seek in their city-that we should abandon the hope that 'someday' elected municipal officials will respond to citizen's environmental concerns, and instead run in elections on Green municipal platforms in order to ensure that the sustainability and overall ecological health of the city of St. John's.

Participants at the discussion agreed that they had been let down too many times by their current municipal government and agreed to take action to develop a policy document that would be used to evaluate prospective candidates, and possibly to recruit a representative candidate for the upcoming Fall municipal election.
